Policy Updates
Assigning University Spaces Policy
Georgia McRae, Senior Transformation Manager, Operational Excellence and Evan Yassky, Executive Director & University Architect, Facilities Plan and Design presented the assigning University Spaces Policy and Procedure. This new policy outlines how the University allocates and manages its spaces in a fair, transparent, and data-driven way to support its goals. It explains who owns and assigns spaces, the priorities for assigning them, and that space assignments will be reviewed regularly.
This policy focuses on how units manage their own spaces; if unit leaders can’t accommodate their unit’s needs, then leadership can submit a request for additional space. Historically the University has assigned additional space to units on an ad hoc basis; this formal policy establishes an annual review process so the university can make an informed decision.
This policy applies to all University spaces, including leased space, and went into effect on January 1, 2025.
Evaluating Faculty Teaching Effectiveness Policy
Erin Malloy, Associate Provost for Faculty Development and Success Director, Center for Faculty Excellence, presented a new Evaluating Faculty Teaching Effectiveness Policy. This policy demonstrates UNC-Chapel Hill’s compliance with required elements from the UNC System policy that faculty with teaching as part of their annual work plan have their teaching evaluated on an ongoing basis and as required for promotion and/or tenure. The elements for evaluation of teaching include self-assessment, student (learner) feedback, and peer assessment.
The University also is required to provide resources to improve teaching and to have formal means of recognizing excellence.
This policy went into effect on January 8, 2025.
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Policy
Adam Swift, Fire Safety and Emergency Response Manager (University Fire Marshal) presented an updated Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Policy. The updates in this policy highlight a transition in AED management from individual departments to centralized oversight via EHS Fire Safety. Centralization will improve inventory tracking across campus, regular maintenance, and annual inspections conducted alongside regular fire extinguisher checks. EHS Fire Safety was able to add 300 new AED machines throughout campus, so each building has at least one. Departments can still purchase additional AEDs but are encouraged to coordinate additions with EHS.
